Agent-Led Growth
Someone asks an AI assistant, "What's the best CRM for a 20-person startup?" Seconds later they have a shortlist. No Google search, no ten landing pages, no comparison spreadsheet.
Sometimes they take the top recommendation and never look further. If your product wasn't in that answer, you never got the chance to compete. That shift has a name: Agent-Led Growth.

The funnel is collapsing into one conversation
For twenty years, buying followed a path: search, click, compare, convert. AI compresses all of it into a single chat. By the time a visitor reaches your site, they're validating a decision, not discovering you.
The traffic is small but valuable. Microsoft Clarity's study of AI referrals found:
- Share of site traffic coming from AI assistants
- <1%
- Conversion rate vs search and social traffic
- 3x
- Of 1,277 sites already converting AI visitors
- 52%
The catch: if you're missing from AI answers, your top of funnel is shrinking quietly, and your dashboards won't tell you why.

From SEO to AEO: where we are now
Each layer builds on the one before. None replaces it.
- SEO: help humans find you on search engines.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): get your content cited in AI answers.
- AEO (Answer/Agent Engine Optimization): be the product the AI recommends, not just a source it quotes.
- ALG (Agent-Led Growth): build acquisition around AI agents that discover, evaluate and even onboard on a user's behalf.
- AX (Agent Experience): make sure an AI can actually use your product once it finds it.
“ SEO is still the foundation. It's just no longer the whole building. ”

How to get AI to recommend you
- Show up everywhere that matters. AI forms its view of your brand from hundreds of signals: docs, industry blogs, podcasts, reviews, GitHub. Consistency beats any single viral post.
- Write for problems, not features. Nobody asks an AI for "CRM features". They ask how to stop losing deals when the team forgets to follow up.
- Earn credibility in communities. Reddit, Stack Overflow and niche forums carry weight because they're unfiltered. Contribute expertise, skip the pitch.
- Make your product machine-readable. Clean documentation, structured data, semantic HTML and API specs are now your AI storefront.

Agent Experience: the part nobody is ready for
Getting recommended is step one. A human who hits a confusing onboarding flow might push through. An AI agent just moves on, because switching to a competitor costs it nothing.
The metric that matters is time-to-aha: how fast an agent goes from finding your product to completing a real task with it. The easiest test is to onboard onto your own product with an AI coding assistant. If it can't get a working setup from your docs in minutes, neither can your next customer's.

What to measure, because your dashboard won't show it
Traffic, CTR and CPA still matter. Add these:
- AI referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others
- Recommendation share: how often you appear when AI is asked about your category
- AI citation frequency of your content
- Agent onboarding success using only your documentation
- Time-to-aha when an AI guides setup
The tooling is still catching up. Even rough tracking gives you a signal competitors will miss.

This is a new playbook, not a replacement
SEO rewarded brands that understood Google. Social rewarded brands that won the feed. Agent-Led Growth will reward products AI can understand, trust, recommend and use.
Keep the ads and the SEO. Add outcome-focused content, real community presence, machine-readable docs and onboarding built for agents. The winners will be recommended before a customer even thinks to search.
