What headless actually means
In a traditional store, the part customers see (the frontend) and the part that runs products, orders and inventory (the backend) are glued together. Change one and you risk breaking the other.
Headless cuts the glue. Frontend and backend talk through APIs but run independently. Think of a restaurant where the kitchen keeps cooking while the dining room is redesigned, or a takeaway counter is added, without anyone touching the stove. A headless setup has four parts:
- Frontend: website, app, PWA or any customer touchpoint
- API layer: the bridge between the two sides
- Backend: catalogue, inventory, payments, orders and customer data
- Headless CMS: blogs, banners and landing pages, managed separately

Headless vs traditional
Traditional platforms lock you into templates, slow risky updates and platform-level scaling. Headless gives you full design freedom, fast low-risk changes, one backend feeding many channels, and layers that scale independently.
Traditional platforms aren't bad. For a small store with a simple catalogue, they're often the right call. But if you're growing fast, selling across channels or trying to stand out, you'll hit the ceiling sooner than you expect.

Speed is a revenue lever
A headless frontend built on a framework like Next.js can be server-rendered or statically generated, which means faster pages and stronger Core Web Vitals, now part of how Google ranks pages. The commercial case is clear. A Google-commissioned Deloitte study found that a 0.1-second faster mobile site delivered:
- Conversions on retail sites
- +8.4%
- Conversions on travel sites
- +10.1%
- Average spend by retail shoppers
- +9.2%
Because the CMS is decoupled too, your content team can publish freely without slowing the store down.

Freedom to build what your brand needs
With React, Next.js or Vue, your developers build exactly the experience your brand needs, including AR try-ons, 3D product views or custom configurators that templates can't support.
One backend can then power your website, app, marketplaces, social shops and new channels as they appear, with the same pricing and stock everywhere. Personalisation tools like Segment or Klaviyo plug in cleanly, so you can test layouts and recommendations per segment without touching the backend.
“ Your backend keeps running the business. Your frontend finally gets room to evolve. ”

The stack behind it, and why AI loves it
- Frontends: React, Next.js, Vue.js, Angular
- Commerce backends: Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce (Magento), BigCommerce, commercetools
- Headless CMS: Contentful, Strapi, Sanity
- APIs: REST and GraphQL
This is MACH architecture (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, Headless), the base of composable commerce, where you pick the best tool for each job. It also makes AI easy to add: recommendations, intent-aware search, chatbots, dynamic pricing and stock forecasting all connect by API, no rebuild needed.

Why India is a strong fit
In India, mobile isn't a preference. It's the baseline, and on the fast networks most new buyers now have: 5G models made up about 90% of the 151 million smartphones shipped in 2025.
Headless makes it easier to build Progressive Web Apps that load fast, feel native and skip the app store. A decoupled frontend also handles India's real complexity: multiple languages, UPI, wallets, BNPL and cash on delivery, and different behaviour in metros and Tier 2 and 3 cities, all from one backend.

Is headless right for you?
A strong fit if you: need a distinctive storefront, sell or plan to sell across channels, are growing fast, care about speed and SEO, want AI or custom features, or are expanding internationally.
Probably not yet if you: run a small store with a simple catalogue, don't need much customisation, or lack development resources to manage a more complex setup.
At Apro, we start with your business and customers, then recommend what makes sense, whether that's headless, Shopify, or something in between.
